Annenberg Media uses media and telecommunications to advance excellent teaching in American schools. This mandate is carried out chiefly by the funding and broad distribution of educational video programs with coordinated Web and print materials for the professional development of K-12 teachers. It is part of The Annenberg Foundation and advances the Foundation's goal of encouraging the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge.

Notes from Final Session, Friday, March 19th: “Learning From Each Other”

1. Ideas not yet on the table
Larry Gross, referring to his (quite wonderful) International Journal of Communication as an example
Are there bodies of work we should no longer commit to paper?
What do we need to put on paper? Let’s steadily reduce what we print.

There are many benefits to going online and off paper. Here, for example are several of the many benefits of having the International Journal of Communication online:
--No space limitations
--“Up” in less than a week
--All media—text, slides, audio, video
--No postage, Xeroxing, mailing
--“Papers” a printed journal can’t publish (too long for print, etc.)
--Fully reviewed, refereed journal—key to a strong journal is editorial board (outstanding), not being on paper.
--Software used for IJC: “Open Journal”

2. Agenda for Change, Tangible Actions from the Conference
--Eco Font
--Alternative ways of teleconferencing. Try connecting Malvern telepresence site to sites uisnf other tecnologies, for example, the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences system, and the Polycom system at Annenberg Media. Bargain hard for the Cisco Telepresence system, or build our own such system. We have excellent IT folks.
--Automatic monitor shutdown, computer sleep mode, when not in use for xx seconds, minutes…
--Green all our events—green vendors, “Green Cuisine” in our other locations
--Telecommute a day a week, every business day one person telecommutes
--Every paper-mailed announcement a seed packet that can be planted
--Green catering, Recycling in all offices
--Spend the time to develop clear metrics, targets: For all x, reduce by 5%. For all y, reduce by 10%...
--Adopt USC targets
--Use reminders—for example, USC’s lights off when you leave
--Recyclable Ink—was it a Lauren idea? Email to Leonard to find out.
--Recycle Toner cartridges
--Form Green Teams, Committees, in each office
--Designate a person in each office to talk to EcoWiki
--Go for minimum of bronze award level throughout all Annenberg orgs
--Adopt one thing you’re going to do, and do it
--The idea for the this Greening meeting came from the current work of the Sunnylands Trust and from a thought from Leonard Aube, who noted all the ideas for greening that came out of the IT group discussions at the preceding Annenberg Groups and Centers meeting
--What will you say to others back at the office who didn’t attend this meeting?
--Some, perhaps many, changes can be new policies that are instituted
--Put everything we came up with and presented, on the EcoWiki by Wednesday, March 24
--Establish a “Greening Structure” when we go back
--In a couple months, have a video conference to see where we are. IT folks will schedule the video conference. Pete Neal from Annenberg Media in touch with Rich Cardona of Penn—connecting Polycom to Cisco telepresence.
--Make IT team “permanent”—an outstanding group that works so well together 8-)
--Targus bags made from plastic bottles
--What about involvement of other Annenberg centers, e.g., Annenberg Institute at Brown?
--“We have a thing to do for Wednesday, a plan to get back together via video conference, and motivation.”
